product tankers are chiller than chemical tankers but still deal with dangerous cargoes, gases like H2S, nitrogen, benzene from diesel or gasoline. not as much as in pure benzene but after years this will show if you are not careful. and you can never be too careful if you are an AB, pumpman or chief officer
offshore. you'll end up caring all sorts of shit for drilling platforms like methanol, nitrogen, radioactive stuff, -135 degrees Celsius flash point bs chemicals, etc
can't speak for american companies coz i never sailed with one but the europeans ones that i sailed had internet free internet onboard. not pretty common on other types of vls. short contracts 2-2 months contracts for chem. 3-3 months for product, 28-28 days for offshore.
world wide coverage. no costal navigation.
can differ from company to company. my other colleagues that are on product tankers have 4+1 months contacts
and the most important biggest salaries. especially for top 4.
3rd mate to 2nd mate (oow) jump is something like 500-1000$/euro more.
