Both are 42-32-22 into 42-22. Both with friction thumbies for the front. The issue with it for a trail bike is not the shifting but the gearing ratios. You actually just want to be on the 32t which you don't have, most of the time. After riding the marin a fair bit on trails I think this mod would suit fast gravel bikes or commuter/beater type things much better, like the giant will be.
