1x road is already happening, with bikes like the 3T Strada and Tarmac SL7 selling well with 1x configurations. Outside of specific situations, there's no reason to have front shifting anymore, and the move to 13 or 14 gears in the back will solve almost all of those as well. With something like 40 x 9-36 13sp you're covered in a wider range than 53/39 x 11-29 12sp, but you don't get a few steps that will matter for people who are more sensitive to larger jumps in gearing, and you don't get that final gear that almost nobody uses. If you really feel like you need that sort of gearing you could probably swap the 40t chainring for 44t. In the pro ranks, 1x is already showing up in TTs because aero, and a cheeky bastard placed 3rd in the junior WC last year on a Strada running 1x.
