Not only are the lanes cheaper and faster to build than rail, but you can interline many routes through BRT lanes in busier areas and then fan the routes out across the rest of the city to act as feeder lines, this also reduces transfers. This was how Ottawa operated their bus transit for decades and it was fairly efficient until it recently started reaching the limit due to increasing ridership. The BRT alignment is now being converted to LRT.
