These were once called the Class E 40, but were renumbered to Class 140 in 1968. They are a general purpose locomotive with over 800 being built, used in both passenger and freight service. Some remain in use today by DB and other small operators either because it was cheap stock to buy or due to the good traction power these locomotives have.
