Why dont the companys modernise the disel locomotives and fully itegrate them to the electricl way of recieving power. It would be a costly investemnt at first but in te long run it would be effecive. They wouldnt even need to modify the locos that much and if they really needed extra space and a low cost solution they could add a transformator railcar behidnd the locomotive and there would not be a need for overheadwires if you get creative and make a ground wire wich is powerd and the loco has a contact with it (literary a cable lying on the ground shielded and protected so its not stolen and causes damage).
