Only thing why people forget about it is habit, all bikes should have some kind of bashguard to save a leg and prevent chain drop, its total stupidity to keep them opened - obvious to anyone that just enters the sport, but...habit, habit is what makes you think they are perfectly safe since "everyone does it" and stop you thinking in possible cause-possible effect.
In road riding group crashes often end up with chainrings piercing someones leg hand etc even when they crash even while the chain is on the big ring. Ive seen those things piercing trought leather spd shoes in mtb as well.
