Entire S-bahn services across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are digit coded. E.g everyone in Munich kkows that S8 and S1 are the two only lines that stops in Munich Airport. The European S Bahn system is way more based than any transit system in the world except for Japan and China. What makes Japan's transit system so alpha is their extreme detailing literally shifting focus from getting to Point A from Point B to instead losing your mind of all the fucking names of every single branch of commuter rail that runs through Tokyo.
Imagine having to transfer between 7 commuter rail lines at a point and you have to remember them all by their names, it's hella lot easier to just go with a digit coded line system. Makes it easier for the operators too.
