The Prince Edward Viaduct in Toronto is probably the greatest piece of forward thinking in the cities history. The bridge has 2 decks, one for vehicular/pedestrian traffic and one for the Subway. However when it was being planned it was only to have 1 deck, but the designer and R.C.Harris (then commissioner of public works) envisioned that one day there would be some sort of rail line under Bloor Street so they pushed for a lower deck to be added into the design. This idea was controversial at the time due to the increased costs. The designer and Harris eventually got their wish however and the second deck was added. 48 years later the decision to spend a little more would pay off since in 1966 the Bloor-Danforth Subway line opened and now uses the lower deck of the bridge to cross the Don Valley.
