This is the new gondola to the Klein Matterhorn in Switzerland. It's the highest gondola in Europe, and in fact the highest point in Europe reachable by any mechanized means of transport. This new "3S"type gondola was built parallel to the old aerial tramway from 1979. The difference is that in an aerial tramway the two gondolas which run on carrying cables are attached to the same traction cable, so they work like a funicular railway where the vehicles act as counterweights.
The "3S" gondola also has the gondolas running on carrying cables like an aerial tramway, but they engage and disengage the traction cable, like a gondola lift. This allows for very large gondolas with long stretches between supports but operating frequently like a gondola lift.
