When you go between big cities in Germany, the train is mostly faster. It goes 250km/h+ for long periods of time, saving you 1-2h compared to driving.
With the car on the autobahn, all you get is endless construction sites and traffic jams.
It ultimately boils down to city<->city vs. countryside<->countryside. For the latter the car is faster.
In my city<>city commute, I can slightly beat the train with driving when I always use google maps for real time traffic routing. It picks one of 7 different routes, sometimes taking large detours. Without gmaps, no way. Traffic is unpredictable
