You can ruin a chain this way. Also all these so-called 'degreasers' that are water-based are garbage and don't work. I've tried them at full, non-diluted strength, and they don't work any better than dish soap (i.e. not at all).
Use pic related or similar. Leaves no residue of itself. Wipe as much of the grime off parts like cogs and chainrings with a rag or paper towel first, then put some of this on a rag or paper towel and finish up. Use an old toothbrush or similar as necessary, too. One can of this lasts me a couple months.
