this would almost definately make your current mech work with a 11-40 cassette.
It's more expensive, especially for a high quality modern 2 piece crank, but ideally you'd change to a subcompact crank, like 46-30 (or that AND a wider cassette), because losing the high end is preferable to losing the close gaps imo.
