My dad gave me his mid 00s mid-end 26" xc mtb (3x9s deore groupset and hubs, manitou fork, integrated headset, hydraulic tektro brakes). I've been fixing it up since last autumn: washed it, bled the brakes, replaced seal on the fork and regreased it, replaced the cables and housings, regreased the hubs, tightened up and trued the wheels, tuned everything up.
I want to replace the tires, but there are hardly any decent ones in 26" size. The industry has stopped making xc bikes in 26" format, should I consider getting 27.5" rims and rebuilding the wheels? Are there any real advantages to it? I know it won't turn into a speed machine, but it's supposed to be an improvement. Building, tensioning and truing wheels is not a problem for me, I want to make the bike as future proof and enjoyable as I can while I have the time to do it
Since I live in flatlands, I will be using it on rough flat terrain, where agility and instant acceleration doesn't matter too much. I'm a short guy, only 5'8", and the bike fits me very well, so I want to keep it running.
On the photo it's the grey one (sadly can't take a proper picture of it since I'm away from home this week)
Best wishes and success to everyone in the thread
