>>1424644>Governments don't want to fork out the cash to properly fix the issue by building a higher three lane per direction bridge.I'm no civil engineer, but I can see some problems with this idea, logical as it sounds:
- If the new bridge were to be built on the current alignment, it would require closing a major corridor for several months (optimistically). Then traffic going to and from the northern beaches would have to go via Artarmon and Frenchs Forest, shitting up an already congested route that is also undergoing roadworks.
- Otherwise, commuters switching to the Manly ferry will cause ferry services to become congested, as well as surrounding bus services or parking spaces. Speaking of bus services, closing the Spit Bridge for construction will also either shut down the B Line for several months, or reroute it so as to become completely inconvenient.
- There are very few alternative alignments for a new six lane bridge that won't require excessive amounts of compulsory acquisition. The stuck-up northern beaches cunts will inevitably cry NIMBY, and the bridge will cost far more that it will be worth.
Additionally, it looks like the Beaches Link will render a new bridge moot, and, once completed, enough cars might use the tunnel such that the government will deem it feasible to run dedicated public transport corridors separated from traffic along the existing bridge.
