>>1765852I used 3x7 as an example, I have 2x7, 2x8, 3x7, 3x8 and 3x9 and 1x10 bikes in my house. I just don't see the benefits of 1x, except for slight weight savings, which are mostly lost on the massive cassette.
Spending more than $400 on a new bike that I will end up rebuilding and modifying would be ridiculous.
Last year I bought my grandfather a Fuji Absolute 1.9 for ~$350 and it came 2x8, feels wonderful.
If something isn't completely broken or hopelessly outdated, there's no point in switching the whole drivetrain. The only reason I put 1x10 on my old touring bike is because it had ancient steel cranks, singlewall freewheel wheels and all this "retro" bullshit that weighed a fucking tonn and had a tiny range. Sold all that shit, and the new drivetrain was practically free. And I can't say 38 on 11/42 is enough, and 36 is the smallest gear I've seen on 110BCD. The top speed is low, climbing isn't easy when it's all loaded and the chainline is about as straight as your sexual orientation. Lowest gear drops the chain if backpedaled.
It was a fun experiment, but 2x9 would have been a better choice.
