I'd have to either quit my job and move to an SIU city, or buy a hotel room for two weeks at a time in between hitches. And I have no idea if I'd even have a chance of landing something as a new AB. My impression is that there isn't a lot of work right now. I tried to get some advice from them but they weren't very forthcoming. I guess they favor Piney Point graduates, and as good an opportunity as Piney Point is, I don't really want to go back to school.
I visited a West coast union a year ago and they were much more encouraging and willing to talk, although they were kind of pushing their own deckhand school too. Still, I'm considering moving out there next year, trying to either get something through the union or as other anon said, as a direct hire. I feel more optimistic now that I have my AB, but the workings of this industry still seem kind of hush hush and I feel like I'm flying kind of blind.
