Pic related PKP class Pt31, introduced in the thirties, in service well into seventies, also served as the basis for the post-war class Pt47. The "thirty-one" is said to be the most successful Polish express steam locomotive (inb4 Pm36-2, she's an overrated, experimental bitch). These locomotives look simple yet aesthetic enough when compared to, say, non-streamlined NYC Hudsons or Niagaras, which look like rugged workhorses despite also being express locomotives.
As of the German steam - any 2-3-1 of theirs is glorious, some of them were used by PKP after the war (class 03 as Pm2 and the streamlined class 03.10 as Pm3).
