These lines were built cheaply in the 19th century, because the terrain made it very expensive to build broad gauge lines, and the economy didn't allow such large construction projects. This means that nowadays travel times are very slow. The theoretical 15 hour journey from Ferrol to Bilbao takes less than 6 hours by road. It's nothing short of a miracle that these lines survived the massive closures of spanish narrow gauge lines in the 60's and 70's.
Some lines use single railcars because of low demand. Locals call them "Tamagochis".
