>>1642854This is absolutely 100% false in the realm of mountain biking, each brake has a completely different function and you should be considering both of them completely independently as you brake, slowing down isn’t important, but keeping grip is. There’s many times per ride that it would be stupid to brake with the front because of grip and lack of grip conditions, meanwhile the rear is important in descents where a front washout would be catastrophic or for controlling speeds in berms (where using the front brake heavily would fling you right side up), I’m sure for commuting its fine to think of the front as the main brake and rear as emergency, but when grip is far more precious than speed, it’s completely different
But I agree that the times where I’m shifting or preshifting are usually not heavy braking situations
