one of my goals this year was to complete an "everest." I failed a couple of times when my training scheme used to be commuting 15mi/day + 100mi ride with big climbs on weekend.
I cut out the gigantic weekend rides which were knocking me out for the entire following week, and started running to the gym 4-5 times per week to do hiit body weight exercises. I continued the daily commute and my 7h climbing-fest on Saturday turned into a 2h sprinting-fest.
This was a better strategy because I maintained the energy to make it into the gym so often and get a good workout just by doing lunges and things.
It worked because I completed my goal a couple of weeks ago.
