Good idea to just keep 1000 worth of yen on you at all times too. Just get it exchanged at the airport. We made the mistake of waiting and could not get them changed out the rest of the trip. Rode around with $2000 and it was useless. Supposedly, you can change money out at post offices, but I had several turn us down. If they don't turn you down have a Japanese address ready to give them. They will not change it without an address. Just use a hotel address in a city. They don't check.
