We had trains like these on various local routes in Poland and it didn't work well. Set-outs and set-ins along the route made the already long trips even longer and barely attractive for potential passengers. It could make sense if the freight cars were attached at the first station and uncoupled at the final station without any switching performed in the middle of the route, but either way additional weight negatively affects acceleration and braking which are crucial for local services.
