Drop bars encourage a racer mentality. That's what they were designed for. Descending "at speed" is pointlessly dangerous and should be reserved for competitive cycling events. They encourage riding positions that adversely affect comfort and sexual health, as well as reduce leverage for climbing and safe handling. It is hard to see when you have been riding drops for years. I strongly encourage anyone on the fence about this to keep an open mind and ride a very upright, fat tire bike on a spirited recreational ride
