You never defined "useful range".
The only thing mentioned so far, is that a car that will get sun up to 30 degrees off angle, so everything thats the upper part of the frame is basically solar cells.
Which only yields 30km/day of recharge, in central europa.
Thats Sion, of start-up Sono Motors.
For something more realistic, like
Toyota Prius or Auris, Solar will be a small portion of the roof. Which won't even yield something as impressive as the Sion.
For realistic cars, it doesn't really serve any purpose, but charging the battery, to avoid drainage depletion, once the car is stationary.
Which is reasonable to spark up the engine, but not for a full on EV mode.
