I use a particular wrench. There's different names for it, but "sliding bar" is likely to get results. It's a very controlled movement, one hand pushes, the other pulls, there's no way it will slip off during use. Because of that, you can use all of your retard strength without worry.
Make sure your nuts/axle are hardened cromoly, wouldn't try it with stainless.
