oh my god. i found out my hand me down bike is only 33:18. i've been riding (only for a short while) with only 48 gear inches lol. the 3rd and tallest internal gear is 1.36 but it only gets me to 65 gear inches. just now i rode around a bit in 3rd gear with some elevation changes but no longer steeper hill climbs yet. it was a bit tough and i got mad sweaty but i could deal with this after some training. but then something like 86 gear inches like on a typical fixie setup will take it even further. that's good for 50 kph if you can pedal at 130 rpm. probably overkill if you mainly ride in quiet neighborhoods. but scientists say 40-60 rpm is actually more efficient. a lower gear ratio is probably more reasonable if you do a lot of starting and stopping, ride at slower speeds, and climb hills. i'm not into this whole fixie scene like doing mad skids and riding recklessly in traffic or competing in events. but larping as a track cyclist could be fun i guess but i think i'll ride single speed with brakes. maybe swap to fixie after a while to get a good workout down hills too.
