but you are right depending on what type of azi you work
i.ve worked with cpp azi and rpm azis
on variable rpm azis they go just one way. 0 to +100. they have no reverse mode, this means you need to 180 the thruster to go from ahead to astern.
on cpp you can go as you please
this is what i did on rpm
get in position
set them against eachother 5-6%
(on my vsl it was a big delay from 0rpm to x, so we had them both ruining at some small rpm to counter this delay)
give stb azi more power 10-15% and bow thruster whatever needed to go smoothly alongside.if you gain too much speed just reduce stbd azi to 5-6rpm % or whatever scale your ship uses and counter with the other that is already running and bow thr accordingly
for going fwd or aft you can use whichever you like by playing with the azi angle
on cpp azi. what ve learned from older captains
one use it longitudinally to go fwd or aft as needed and one transversal to go stbd or port (since you can play with the pitch from -100 to +100%
