The Puffing Billy Railway, one of four 2ft6in (762mm) narrow gauge railways constructed by Victorian Railways in the early 1900s. It snakes through the lower Dandenong ranges, just east of Melbourne. Originally it ran from Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook - the first five kilometres from UFG to Belgrave are now part of the Melbourne suburban broad gauge rail network. Closed in 1954, it is now virtually entirely volunteer-run since preservation efforts began, culminating in the reopening of the full line in 1998.
