>>1518325How about this fucking trainwreck of an infrastructure project?
The Big Dig was the most expensive highway project in the US, and was plagued by cost overruns (planned to cost $2.8b when it started in 1982, that inflated to ~$8b by completion), delays (planned to be done in '98, ACTUALLY finished in '07), leaks, design flaws, charges of poor execution and use of substandard materials, criminal arrests, and the death of one motorist from a guardrail slicing through their car. At least as a result of mitigation, the T was (and still is being) expanded; the Kingston/Plymouth and Middleboro Lines of the commuter rail were opened in 97 as mitigation, the Greenbush line opened 10 years later due to design delays (mainly around downtown Hingham), and the GLX finally opened through Somerville in 2021.
And yet the most important infrastructure project, the Central Artery RAIL Tunnel, has yet to go beyond the proposal phase, likely because of fears of a Big Dig 2: Electric Boogaloo. Like, seriously, if Phila-fucking-delphia can do it almost 30 years ago, Boston can fucking do it now, and better
