On demand cars would *double* vehicle miles driven, not cut it. Instead of just going from Point A to Point B they also have to go from Point B to Point A'. Not to mention all the time between peak hours that they're just circling around with nothing to do. Go look at the studies on what Uber has done to traffic congestion, and that's still a longass way from "eliminating car ownership".
Oh, and there's also the thing where no one who doesn't live in an undrivable urban hellhole would ever go along with the idea of abolishing cars. Look how fucking hard it is to get people to give up incandescent light bulbs and plastic straws.
