Surprised no one has mentioned this here yet, but it's been confirmed now that DB will phase out all their ICE 2 class 402 units until 2027. Unlike their close predecesors class 401, which were the first ICE units put into service in the early 90s and also the first real modern high-speed trains in Germany, they will not receive a general overhaul to increase the livespan similar to the LDV program for the ICE 1.
Main reasons for this decision are apparently the different less durable build structure of the second generation and issues with a potential ETCS retrofit. Unlike the first gen, which runs with a loco on each end, the second gen is strictly speaking a push-pull train with a driver's cab on one end. Since their main purpose was running on lines as double units with splits midway to service different destinations (Ruhr Area - Berlin and Bremen / Hamburg - Munich), finding a new place for them within the network would be a bit of an issue as well as they are already being replaced on their current lines by the 7 car ICE 4 units. The last main inspection on an ICE 2 unit was already completed in 2023 and the first unit already has been retired from service as well. It's also not too farfetched to consider that some of the retired units will also as spare parts donors for the modernized ICE 1 units.
