Entry level pure road bikes have lower gearing now than they used to. Infact they now have very decently low gearing.

There is a difference between 30-34 and 34-34, but which of those bikes, one which tires twice as wide, will be easier to ride up a sealed hill? It's the road bike, because it's lighter and rolls better on road.
