The French weren't stupid, they caught on to what was going on so they put out flawed blueprints which the Soviets developed into their supersonic death trap. Just because it was the first doesn't mean it was the best by any means. Most flights of the TU-144 had some mechanical failure it's a wonder it didn't crash and burn a whole load of people on the single route it ran for fifty five flights.
