Santa Fe was a class act to the end, but they also quickly moved their FP45s into the freight pool once Amtrak took over. Milwaukee Road with its five locomotives was the only other railroad to order FP45s. Santa Fe's 9 units remained in operation into the 1990s, while MILW's 5 units were all out of service and scrapped by the early 1980s. The lack of dynamic brakes on the MILW units meant that crews hated them and contributed to their early retirement.
