I was going to start a dcc install and detail upgrade to an Athearn RTR model I've had for quite a few years, but when I took it out of storage there was oil dripping out of the truck assemblies and into the packaging. Once I took the shell off I got a good look at how there must have been way more grease than needed applied at the factory. Over the years in storage I guess it separated and started to leak out of the assemblies. Fortunately it isn't a huge issue to disassemble the trucks and clean everything up, though it just means one more step in the little project. Pic related is what the trucks and worm gears looked like before being disassembled and cleaned. The contacts for the track power wires were also pretty corroded, so I'll have to make sure the unit actually runs and I don't need to replace them.
