I think from the beginning there was a bit of anti-pedestrianism baked in with those wide roads. So that made it easier for them to prioritize cars when automobiles became mass-produced.
Had they started out with something like in Europe it would have been tougher to sell car-dependency.
Also, American cities never had plazas.
