Cyclists are also necessarily in an elevated state of sympathetic nervous system activation.
If car drivers were subject to similar arousing stimuli (via AR headset) they would react more quickly and perform to higher standards, and the weak and frail / easily distracted would choose not to drive.
However this would have an economic cost. Ride sharing would be necessary for the unfit to get to work. We would lose an important part of our national identity, and divorce rates would increase.
The alternative is to relax vehicle safety standards and accept a higher attrition rate, which would result in more camaraderie, technically proficient drivers, and a stronger sense of identity.
However, the tradeoff is that cyclists and pedestrians would be in more danger.
We still haven't considered variance with location, and zoning restrictions. Ownership of the box they inhabit, is, to a large extent, an important consideration for many humans. If we take away the box, they transfer a sense of ownership to their microclimate, intersection, etcetera. Is such a thing desirable? Generally, no, only machines should own these things.
