A good driver is aware of all obstacles in their immediate environment and is able to discern how these obstacles will affect other elements on the road. (motorists, pedestrians, cyclists) Driving is not something where you can do your own thing and mind your own business - there will be lousy drivers, there will be children and animals running into the road, there will be cars pulling out of parking spaces, obstacles forcing other drivers/cyclist to come into your lane etc.
