Also, I do believe it was hampered by the lack of a Kylchap or similar blast pipe to give proper draughting (pic related is the triple exhaust of SNCF 242A1).
They chewed through a LOT of coal as a result of this and other design flaws. When they weren't running at full capacity, the grate was too large and a lot of heat would be wasted just keeping it covered in coal.
Later on, it was trialled on a passenger train normally pulled by an A1/A3 as part of the development work for the P2. The P1 kept time, but nearly killed the fireman doing so.
