I like them.
The cutting into shoes issue mentioned is the main drawback. But it's liveable if you aren't riding them very hard/long and your shoes have reasonably strong soles. Maybe look at kinds that don't have sharp ridges if you want them though, like mks gr9. It's also worth learning to trackstand before you move to any kind of foot retention.
I also like pinned flats & clipless. They all have their place
