>>1089348Toe cages aren't bad, they're definitely better than riding without any foot retention at all, but they're far less convenient and comfortable than the "clipless" systems that have been widely available since the late 80's. With a toe cage, you have to slide your foot in the cage and reach down to tighten the strap for maximum effectiveness, and just like with modern clipless, riders needed cycling shoes with stiff soles and slotted cleats that interfaced with the pedals to get the full benefit. See picture.
Modern clipless setups still require shoes, cleats, and pedals, but they're much easier to use, don't require a toe strap that can cut off circulation to your foot, and clipless shoes can actually be quite comfortable to walk around in. They also allow for 'float' that decreases the chances of hurting your knees, and are safer in an accident since you'll pop out of the pedals automatically in a crash.
