There are still lots of canal tunnels in use in the UK. This is Shrewley Tunnel. The smaller tunnel along the footpath was to walk horses through. Some canal tunnels were wide enough to let two boats pass at once; others were single-file and alternated directions. If it didn't have a towpath inside, the boatmen would get on top of the boat, lay on their backs, and push against the tunnel ceiling (a process called legging).
