Hi /n/! newfag here who literally knows nothing about cycle despite living in cycle friendly city(Antwerp,Belgium to be precise). I need new bicycle just to roam around the city,to hang out with friend and so on so my question is what type of cycle would you recommend and what brand? Thanks in advance..

If you just want to have fun, and sometime commute, you should have:

Don't fall for the meme:

If it's not there then it's a no-no. Look for whatever used road bike / vtc, will do the job. Cannodale and Scott are trusty brands in the lower-tier prices.

Go to your local cycle shop and try a few, and go with what you like. Get a basic repair kit and a spare tube and pump, and a water bottle holder like this guy says >>1013508. Avoid chink anything, and if you like mountain bikes then get one. Cannondale and Scott are good, but there are others if you keep your eyes peeled and read around a bit.

Scott bikes are good and cheap in Belgium and Switzerland. Bought a touring bike 7 years ago for 300 CHF and it's still here.

All you need is a bike in the 50-200€ range and a rain coat for when it rains.
Maybe a scarf and gloves for winter, but you probably already have those.

Almost any bike is ok, but fenders and a rack are highly preferable, pic related.

Oh I forgot to mention this: Seeing as how you're from Antwerp, you don't need a repair kit or any nonsense like that, unless you're really into it.
If your bike brakes down, there's gonna be a bicycle repair shop within 5-10min of walking.

OP, if you want something cheap, get a used OTS (old ten speed steel road bike) or rigid 90s mountain bike (swap the tires for semislicks).
If you want to buy something new, get a hybrid (the good kind) such as:
Kona Dew Plus
Trek FX
GT Tachyon
Specialized Sirrus
Marin Muirwoods 29er
Cannondale Bad Boy

And fixing a flat takes 5-10 minutes with a repair kit. If you want to take pride in being unable to do anything to your bike or don't need reliable transportation in the form of a bike then by all means rely on bike shops to fix your flats.

Nope, they do brake, and it's cool in a shitty weather, but they cost way more than a rim brake, which are cheap and easy to change. I also have a bad experience with disk brakes, so definitively a no-go for me.

Clipless are comfy but useless unless you want to spin like a madman, especially if you just want to have fun biking around your house.

Kona is the best brand in terms of build quality, components, and design. Some may say they are overpriced but you get a bike that was designed for the rider and use in mind and not just slapped on components into whatever flavor of the month is in.

For casual riders, the less hassle there is, the better it is, not everyone is a gear head, vintage OTS enthusiast or whatever, some people just want to get from A to B.

I have a Kona Dew Plus, which is more than a halfway decent bike and I don't give a shit about any of the gear head nonsense he mentioned. I use it for light trips and exercise, don't carry extra tubes tires or pump or anything else. It hasn't failed me once in the past 3 years of use. I literally have not done anything to it.

Also, clipless and small tires seemed more dangerous to me in Antwerp, as there is often not much room to overtake other cyclists if you don't want to end up stuck with your skinny tires in the tram tracks.I'd just get a secondhand city bike or mountainbike that shifts well enough (suspension is not really needed I think) but doesn't look too fancy.

You've probably had some smaller brand hydraulics.

For commuting just get a decent set of basic mechanical ones (BB7, BR-M465), that has both (moving and stationary) pad adjustment and you'll be set.

As for costs - rotors will usually last until you bang them up against something and i can go with a set of noname 5Eur pads a whole year, riding daily, including snowy winter with salt and mud. Besides, contrary to V brakes, they don't need to be re-positioned for wear, just screwed in.

...you might want to look at the earlier post. You can get a decent bike without spending or carrying a lot of stuff...which is apparently what you did. Most people get shitty but reliable bikes, and just fucking hate it and write the whole thing off.

There's really nothing wrong with disc brakes IMHO. I've heard some people bitch about adjusting em, but anyone who has trouble with them is probably too stupid to adjust brakes regardless of what kind they are.

Most people in my city ride shitty bikes and couldn't care less.
The "boris" bikes are shit as fuck and yet everyone uses them and bicycle usage is going up across the board (which I kinda hate, it used to be easier to ride without all the bike traffic and retards on bikes).
