For real advice: carry like seven kinds of flashlights and batteries for same, especially when you do IFR flight at night. I HIGHLY recommend this thing called a "hug light" you can probably get it at princess auto. Google it, it looks goofy but the shit is VITAL. Makes setting up the cockpit, preflighting, writing notes, etc. fun. Has a red light to not ruin night vision too. It's better than a head lamp because doesn't interfere with headsets, and the light comes from below eye level, so if you have to use to light up an instrument panel, there won't be shadows. Not a paid shill.
Other than that, eat lots of fruits and vegetables and DON'T SMOKE, ESPECIALLY before you fly, it wrecks your night vision. Blue berries make a difference, I swear.
Manage your sleep well and don't drink too much coffee. You'll get jittery, want to piss, and it does fak all for your alertness. Just sleep well.
Learning to discern optical illusions and mastering night depth perception just takes time, no advice to give there. You'll like night flight. The air is calmer, there's less traffic, it's cooler, so the motor runs better.... it's comfy as hell. You can see your VFR checkpoints more easily, as they're often the only thing that's lit up, or are lit up uniquely. OK, go have fun, no more free instruction today m
