Huh, I guess it's in about the right location, but why? It's a roadbike, so the chainstays should be pretty close together, both because of the 130mm spaced hub and no need for big tire clearance. I've seen this on mountain bikes before, but never on a roadbike, and it's usually achieved with a nice S-ben chainstay instead of an ugly divot.

It's because those frames were made with straight aluminum tubes - straight aluminum tubes can be made lighter and stronger by increasing their diameter. A modern aluminum frame will have a nice gentle bent instead of an ugly divot because of more recently available hydro-forming techniques that Cannondale couldn't have used back when they started producing frames.

What's the weight on that thing? I'm assuming it's a weight weenie build and that's why you went single speed, carbon cranks and bars, and mech disc brakes.

Frame choice is odd though, for that price you could've got a carbon frame and the weight saved would've made up for using hydraulic discs (of which a decent set can be had for as much as those levers cost alone).

Around 22 pounds. I didn't think about weight when building it up, I just wanted a nice solid single speed bike that I could piece together with used parts. It just happens to not weigh a ton because nice parts are light by default.

The frame is SS specific with an EBB, no derailleur hanger. I got it used off eBay about 4 years ago and specifically wanted a steel frame for its ride qualities. It was cheap because it's "outdated" with a non tapered headset and no thru axles. But it rides super quiet and smooth, very fun. I'm not racing, so a little flex isn't going to bother me. Riding a frame made in New York and not Taiwan is kinda cool, too.

BB7s with quality cables and Paul levers is a great set up. I have no reason to go hydraulic on a simple cross country bike that doesn't see thousands of feet of descending. I might upgrade to Paul klampers if I can find some second hand.

Have you actually tried some? You don't need to be riding DH to benefit from them, the modulation is a shit load better than cable brakes especially crappy single piston calipers like BB5/7s (and Klampers).

To give you an idea of just how retarded Paul's prices are for the price of a full setup (two levers and two calipers) you could get Hope's top model (Tech 3 V4) with enough left over for a pair of floating rotors from them too. The Hope's would also be close to the same weight if not less.

Generally it's not rainy enough around here (SF Bay Area) to need them, although I've thought about it during the "winter". On the pictured ride, fenders would have been a baaaad idea - they would have packed up with mud.

Yes, I've owned and ridden Hope/Shimano/Magura and some Avid hydraulic brakes and serviced them myself. I know what I'm missing, it's not much and it's not worth it on this particular bike. My brake set up as shown cost around $220 and has been solid for 3 years.

Your attitude towards cable discs is common, people get traumatized by them on OEM builds. You have to use good cable sets and take the time to set them up right (like any cable brake). Where you see lack of performance and lever feel, I see reliability, ease of ownership, and affordability. They're popular with bikepackers, tourers and single speeders for those reasons. They aren't worth it in that sense, because I see nothing but headache with those. The Saints on my DH bike have been fucking disasters, and those are suppose to be high(er) end brakes. You can't even buy replacement seals from Shimano, you have to buy an entirely new caliper or lever. Planned obsolescence..

I did and they still felt like shit, even bought the fancy Avid levers with adjustable leverage which made them a bit better but still crappy compared to even my worst hydros. The front was passable, had it been dual piston it might have been comparable to a low end hydro, but the rear was just terrible and that inconsistency in the feel was just unacceptable.

Absolute bullshit. For around $110 you can get a pair of M506s which are actually really good. I have a set on one of my bikes and XT M785s on another and they're pretty similar.

It rides very well. The smaller wheels take a bit to get used to but the frame geometry is built around the wheels size and it feels almost like a standard touring bike.

Discs rotors get bent easily and I didn't want to have to remove the rotors when packing the bike. Plus you can find v-brake pads anywhere, hell even walmart has them. Disc pads are proprietary and more difficult to source in a pinch. I use soft pads that are rim friendly, also I remove debris from my pads as part of my weekly maintenance.

The Rohloff is excellent, I like it so much I have one on my 700c Waterford tourer. That bike has discs.

Alaska and Yukon Territory was breathtaking. Some of the most challenging and beautiful terrain I've had the pleasure of riding.

I ostwd the photo. My bike stand is not a shop quality park tool. The locking mechanism is getting a little shady . I let the bike hang naturally and then lock it so there is no pressure on it . I was also working on the Rd. Not sure why the auto rotation. 4 chan does this a lot

You should find a used one! Mine is a 2010 Elite model, and is honestly 95% as good as a new Tarmac, but only cost me $700. I got pretty lucky with mine, but I don't think it would be too hard to find one for a grand or so.

Personally: The frame geometry would make for a pretty sick Monstercross bike, but that seat -> bar drop that they all seem to be set up with from the factory would be muy uncomfortable on the hands after hours in the dirt. I really wish they'd offer the frameset so that folks like me wouldn't have to throw away the entire cockpit to set it up the way we like it. It's a steel frame manufactured in Taiwan, it would be $600, tops. The frameset with the stainless downtube and chainstays they're releasing is cool and all, but pricy - $1200 for a frameset is getting up into the range where I'd start thinking about just getting a custom frame made instead.

If i had the extra dosh id definitely go for the surly, they get bashed on /n/ a lot but they really are a fantastic bike. The fuji is also a great bike but youll miss out on the extra tyre clearance the surly has to offer.

The bars are Jones loop bars, there real comfy but to expensive, a similar bar for a fraction of the price is the on one mary.

The rack is a surly nice, bit of a boat anchor but having low and hi mounts for the panniers is pretty nice. Panniers are Ortlieb sport packer+, convenient but I miss my old pair of rollers.

huh, I've got one; it didn't feel particularly heavy in my hand when I installed it, but i guess it would have to be more than average due to size and cromo tubing over aluminum. I just got it because of the load rating, but it seemed lighter than I was expecting when I took it out of the box anyway.

Have you had it from new? If so nice job keeping it going.

My frame's 11 years old now but I've only owned it for 3 and it's in desperate need of new bearings, fork is 10 years old (only had it about a month) and needs new seals and same goes for the seatpost. Wheels are also around the same age and could do with new bearings but I've bought a new lighter set (have the front fitted, rear had to be sent back as it got dented in shipping) instead.

Have you had to do much to it to maintain it, other than replacing consumables (chainrings, chain, cassette, brakepads, etc.)? I don't buy much new stuff so don't really know how long things should be expected to last and have no way of knowing if a previous owner had done any servicing.

No not much. Fork and rear shock are still fine. Just put air in them from time to time when I felt it was getting too soft. Brakes are fine. Had them bled and replaced pads and rotors 2 years ago i think. The only things I've done to it are that I changed it to a 1x10 and changed the wheels a couple of times. I think alot of it has to do with having stored inside always. Even in the summer. The previous owner said it was also only kept inside. I know people with 2 year old bikes that they barely ride that are in worse condition than mine.

all digital cameras want to expose the picture so the average brightness is 50% grey. if your picture is mostly snow, the camera will make it 50% grey.
for snow or sunny beaches which to the human eye are white or bright yellow, you need to manually set your exposure brighter in the camera to match human vision.
look for an option called EV or exposure or something, set it to +1, +1.5 or +2 in the snow.

Where I live there are snowmobile trails everywhere. I'm hoping they're packed down enough to do some rides this winter. If you think about it, it's pretty safe because you can hear snowmobiles coming from far away... but I'm sure bicycles will be against the regulations.

Nope. The bike forces such a wide pedalling stance anyway, so rubbing against the fenders is not even close to an issue. The wide stance feels a little weird though, when you're first getting used to the bike, and i tended to rub my heels on the chain stays.

I just bought this dorky rigid mtb for £50 to commute with over the Scottish Winter so I dont wreck my. Its surprisingly fast and spritely. Gonna change to Schwalbe Memathons tho. I know its not a drive side picture...but its got various levels of shimano kit on it, apart from the suntour chainset, and it shifts and brakes well.

Also it has a dumbass adjustable stem which needs replacing.

Im happy with it. It has rack bosses too so who knows I might take it on a few one or two night trips on some landrover tracks into the hills and see how it copes.

Also. I know the bars are tilted forwards...because the guy I got it from had the stem at an awkward rise so I adjusted that down when I rode it home. I am funny about doing up the stem clamp bolts without a torque wrench tho and I only had my multi tool

Measure the chain for stretch (stop by a LBS and ask them to do this if you don't have a tool for it), replace if it's more than 0.75% stretched (this will prolong the life of your sprockets)
If the sprockets are really worn, replace those too
If the brake pads are many years old, replace those, cause brake pads get hard with age and lose their stopping power
Possibly new cables/housing depending on if yours are still good (if they're not good, you'll notice that the braking/shifting will be fucked)
Other than that, you should be fine riding it as-is as long as it doesn't give you any issues. That's a decent bike as a commuter/beater.

Not trying to turn it into a race bike or anything, as the geometry is just not right for that, I will be just using it for fun MTBing now that the days are so short. The FD is ridiculously stiff and relucant to change between rings, it will likely be the first thing to be changed.

Nice. I would have gone that route if I didn't see a 2016 SuperX on sale for less than the MSRP on one of those.

Pic is the 2016 SuperX 105 I bought. Gonna drop ultegra derailleurs on it from a friends bike that got it's shit wrecked. I'll pull the dork disc off when I do that and get a cassette with slightly lower gearing on it too. The frame is *almost* too big for me, but with my awkward build nothing other than a custom bike is going to fit well.

Really though, I've got a bad back from a car accident, I can't really go much lower for more than 5 minutes.

And those pedals are the half platform/SPD XTs, all metal. I like em since it's nice to be able to just hop on and ride somewhere in the neighborhood without pulling out a special set of shoes all the damn time.

FYI there's a new version (PD-T8000) coming out soon with nice pegs on the platform side, fixing the problem of the platform being slippery as fuck in the wet.

Your back will get better with time. Really on a cross bike the drops are for leverage while trying to kill up a hill. The hoods are good enough 90% of the time, and you'd be better off dropping the bars to lower your hoods than to lower your drops.

Fashionwise, yeah the reflectors are kind of useless, and you committed the cardinal sin of not doing >chain on big ring front, little cog back.

It's been like 5 years and it hasn't gotten better. I have the option for surgery but it's not a guarantee that it'll improve, and there's enough of a chance that it'll actually make things worse that I'm just going to live with it.

Is the pain muscular, skeletal, or nervous system related? The first and second, obviously, can be helped by physical therapy and exercise, which I'm sure you know.

Doing daily spine stretches courtesy of Charles Atlas' circa 1936 would probably be good for you.

Also, if you want a pedal that won't slip like those PD TX's or PD T780's, the PD A530's are an excellent choice. Can vouch for them in the wet and in the Northern Winter.

All of the above. I was totally out of it for months because I was riding through a parking lot and some old lady in a van mistook the brake for the gas pedal and sent me flying into traffic.

I was doing PT for about a year, the only thing that's really helped are back exercises, stretches and basically just never going to judo practice ever again.

Those pedals look pretty nice, I'll just wait to see what those new ones look like.

It's a Fuji cape may. It's a simple single speed with a coaster hub. It's fairly light for a cruiser, and is maximum comfy. The goofy seat, and big tires soaks up all the bumps. It's perfect for tooling around town, and riding rails trails.

Problem with that is if you already have lower back problems the ability to push that hard against a pedal can sometimes make it worse, on top of a bit more risk to your knees if you aren't used to it.

And they just really aren't all that fun to ride, if you ask me, which you didn't.

Apparently those PD-T8000s are already out on amazon. The older ones are sweet, but I'm sure having the additional metal pegs is a nice improvement.

Also, anything that breaks that bike is probably going to damn near break me anyway, so it won't see much abuse.

Are those new accessories since the last time you posted these bikes? I dig that water bottle but wonder if it's safe to drink out of plastic that's had 40 years to degrade. Also, I agree that quality old frames are great fun to ride, even better with modern components.

Yup! The water bottle actually has a metal thermos in it but I have yet to drink from there haha. I added the Silca pump and universal break hoods to the italvega. That bianchi is looking sexy. I've never ridden a Bianchi but they look stunning. Liking that color as well.

Just rebuilt/painted this 1978 Araya Criterium Rex. The front chain ring is 64t! I snapped the chain so...it's retired until I find something stronger.
