I want a Colnago. I've always wanted Colnago, since the day I started riding a bike I always wanted a Colnago. I've had Look, Specialized, Raleigh, De Rosa, Panasonic. Now I want the bike.

Am I being stupid for paying a few thousand pounds more than its equivalents for a name? I love the styling, the colour, the fact that I can (and will) be flying out to the factory to get sized for it and it's made from bits of Ferraris and so on but ultimately it's a £10k bike for an average rider with no real performance or ride advantage over the competition.

It's not really the money. I just like it for purely aesthetic and gut feelings. I've done the same with cars before, it's a bit of a letdown.

steel is usually prefered as it gives a more compliant ride, which helps to cushion out the bumps, as it's not as stiff as an aluminium frame, but it's also not as brittle as aluminium and is easier to repair if you were to have cracks, but it's down to the rider to what they prefer, as aluminium is just as good as steel, also aluminium is a fair bit cheaper too.

I mean, there's only OVER 30 YEARS of used MTB components out there. That's nothing at all! Might as well give up and throw away your 26" wheeled MTB at this point because you can't find parts for it anymore.

It's better than what you'd get for that price new, but the ability to test ride and haggle a s/hand bike is pretty important. If a bike can't ride no hands, the wheels don't sit and spin straight in the frame or it has hairline cracks then it's been crashed and it's not desirable at all. Hard to tell this from photos, although it looks ok.

Specifically on that bike, i'd want to know if the triple shifts well. Old STI levers get fucky and if the front doesn't shift well, it's a project worth naught $200, as opposed to a bike with a nice complete group. Spraying the shit out the levers with WD40 can do some good though.

I like a closeish cassette and a triple, it's the compact double and 11-28 of yesteryear, the gearing most serious roadies in the 90s who climbed rode. There is more weight and complexity, but the shift pattern and gear overlap is nice imo. 9 speed parts are cheap and readily available.

Factor in $60 for new tires, and $20 for a new chain. Maybe offer 5 if you really like it.

A LBS near me has a like-new '05 Bianchi Veloce made from 631, with full Campy Veloce 10x3 (pre-QS) and Vento wheels, with a Butterfly Ti saddle, for $650. I'm seriously considering getting it, even though I really don't need yet another steel roadie and it's probably a little small for me and I'm supposed to be saving for an Infinito CV

Check the big bike shops that have their own teams. They'll be be buying the new year models around this time and putting their old ones on consignment. I saw 5 or 6 yellow team Pinarellos at Eurovelo in Vittorio Veneto a couple of weeks ago.

I'm a uni student in the UK, and have ~£1000 budget to spend on a new bike. I ride a fair amount (rode a couple of thousand kilometres across Europe this summer, and commute around London every day) but actually don't know a lot about buying bikes- I daily a beat up 90s MTB and went across Europe on one of my dad's bikes (alu frame, carbon forks)

However, I'm looking for a road bike, probably full carbon, if this is beneficial over alu/carbon mix.

Height: 6'2
Riding- Roads (dur) around England mainly, mix of hills, crap roads, flats etc
Budget- ~£1000

Do I want disc brakes/is that in my budget?
Should I go carbon or aluminium?
Should I save some money and upgrade wheels?

A longer fork will actually shorten the reach of the bike (which is what matters when you're standing up) so it would be counterproductive

See if your bike will take a reach-adjustment headset, if not sell the bike and buy something longer

as long as it's a disc hub with 100x10mm will fit in the front and 135x10mm in the rear, and it'll be 700c/29er rim diameter, disc road wheel sets have been around for a few years so they are pretty easy to find

'Made in japan' is normally a good thing, but with bianchi, they where the cheap models. 'Sport' is also universal bicycle language for entry level. Golden arrow is also pretty crap. All fine though, just don't 'upgrade' (fuck with, waste money) it.

It's in nice original condition (aside from the rims being drilled for schrader valves). It's got the reflectors, pie plate, og brake pads, etc. Most of the wear looks from mother time. This is the best kind of bike to buy. A coat of dust, dry bearings, cheap and unmolested. It will need (some- a lot of) work though.

It would make a great commuter (unless you're weak and somewhere hilly in which case the gearing is too high), but it will never be a great road bike.

As long as a steel frame has been protected from rust and physical impacts, it doesn't degrade over time. With that bike I'd be more concerned with the condition of the wheels, the crappy brakes, and the mediocre drivetrain (esp. shifters) than I would about the frame.

So after taking apart my wheels to clean some shit off my bike I realized how heavy they are so I decided they will be the next thing I upgrade in it.

It's a Canondale CAADX 2016, it has 6-hole discs.

I really have absolutely no idea where to start as I've never bought or built wheels for a CX bike like this.

I've built road wheels before and I know that if I don't get all compatible componentes I'll end up wasting a bunch of money and time, so maybe someone can recommend me where to start? Or maybe even a wheelset that I can just buy?

Again, I can build wheels, I've done it before. Just not for CX bikes with disc brakes.

I'm looking to spend around 300-350 pounds (that's around 400 dollaridoos).

The frame would probably be fine if it's steel. Could be rust. The brakes and shifting are almost guaranteed to suck shit though. Used is a good way to go but man get something more recent. Not worth it.

Get something used on craigslist or up your budget. Anything around 200 will be abysmal. Even used for that amount should absolutely not be used for actual mountain biking on serious trails, the bike will be rattled apart on rough singletrack.

I've been checking all kinds of wheels and these look pretty nice, and light.

However I'm still a fat fuck and all the lightweight wheelsets that I'm seeing recommend max rider weight of 210ish pounds, now me being 200ish it actually makes me a bit scared to ride just 5% away from the max weight.

I guess I'll wait to get lightweight wheels until I stop being a fat fuck, which shouldn't take too long anyway.

what are the best road bikes availble for 700-1000usd? (aprox)

If you're doing 150km on an ancient hardtail, you'll be happiest with another steel hardtail, updated with disc brakes, better tire clearance, etc

Surly and Salsa come immediately to mind, but are probably not really in your budget. REI's house brand Novara may be worth a look.

I'd suggest getting an entry level road bike with the new 2017 sora, new tiagra or 105 (new hood shape and cables routed under the bar tape) from a shop with friendly competent staff. Also get some clipless shoes (fit is the no 1 concern, don't buy online, don't limit yourself to road or mtb shoes, buy the ones that are most comfortable), and have the bike store help you adjust your fit. You can buy pedals online. They should do a basic fit for free, help you setup your cleats, etc.

You won't get the best deal and it's possible to spaghetti your way out of getting help from the shop, but it's worth paying the lbs premium for support.

Don't get memed into a 'versatile' bike. Pure road bikes are GOAT. They are also versatile.

Alternately, if you want to be flashy, you could get something higher end used. It depends on your market and how savvy you are.

Don't buy a bike you don't like. What makes you like it or not might be completely arbitrary but it's important to like it or you won't ride it.

I've ridden road for almost 10 years on many different used bikes. The only new bike i've ever had was a shitty mtb when i was a kid.

When i starting spending real cash, my number one priority was probably being flashy. Hence campag record, full dura ace, full carbon, columbus, oria, 531c, 853, you name it. I ride a lot and only now that i have a long term knee injury am i seeing that bike fit should be the number one priority.

If you don't ride much, it doesn't matter so much, but if you're riding centuries, fit is of paramount importance. This doesn't necessarily mean paying 200 beans for some dangus to point lazers at your knees and finger your bumhole, but even that is often worthwhile.

I recently spend 10 minutes walking around a big specialized store looking to try on shoes, demo an allez, and discuss their fancy fitting system. I didn't get approached once. Fuck them. Good shops do exist though.

My first road bike was $100, tange 5 tubing, 7 speed sis. That bike was the zenith of value. Even for 100x the price, unless you're racing, you barely get anything more. It's not an option for many people though.

What do you think of pic related for £350 ($444 / €417)?

I've looked at the Decathlon Triban SE 500 which is the most common recommendation in this price bracket (costs £300 / $380 / €358)

But this Merlin thing has racier geometry. I'm an amateur with hundreds of miles of experience, on my dad's bikes. Right now I only ride an old Raleigh road bike from the 80s. My reasoning is that if I splash out for a brand new bike, I want it to be as close to something I could use in a sportive as possible.

I don't do proper racing, or even club riding, right now. I just do my own riding, and not very seriously at the moment, although I used to do some charity rides of between 50 to 100 miles a day.

But I want to up my bike game so I can start going for more proper rides. My current road bike is wank, especially since I took the gears off for the purposes of city commuting. Now I want to do proper riding again and I can either upgrade my current bike (derailleurs and shifters at minimum, and probably the brakes too) or splash out on a new one... which I do feel really guilty about 2bh, because I don't know if I will do enough riding to justify it, or whether I'll get bored of proper rides after a few weeks or so.

Thoughts?

When I say I took the gears off, I mean the derailleurs and the downtube shifters. So it's a single speed now, basically. I shortened the chain, so it's just sitting in one gear on the cassette (no chain tensioner; drop-outs are *semi-*horizontal so I just pulled the wheel back as far as possible to tension the chain)

So I want to do some proper rides, but I can't really on this thing. I did have a Shimano Sora rear derailleur that I fitted to it a few years ago (the original one blew apart), and I think I still have it. The front mech was shit though, the spring was gone. And I might have lost the down-tube shifters. Couldn't find them the other day.

Also as I say, the brakes are shocking. Old style single pivot. I would love to put dual pivots on, but that requires drilling the frame, and I can't be fucked. Maybe just new brake pads? Better than nothing I guess.

So in my situation, would you perform these upgrades, or splash out on a brand new bike?

Pic is from google, but same model as mine. Imagine it converted to a single-speed in the fucked up way I described above.

Writing these long ass posts has forced me to think about the process and now I'm thinking maybe I should do the upgrades. Brake pads are quite cheap - the mechs and shifters I *hope* I can find in the garage. If not then down-tube shifters and a front-mech will be needed. But still - upgrade or buy?

RS also has a convertible one that switches volume/pressure for both shocks and tires. Haven't ever used it for tires though so it might suck but it works fine on suspension. Also the gauge comes off if you want to save space.

what do you guys think of this bike?
it would be my first road bike (im currently riding a good old hardtail with 1.5 slicks, got serious with that one so i want to try a road bike. on the mtb ive done 150km trips and stuff, train, etc). im really not familiar with road bikes btw, in the riding sense.

bike is full tiagra, crankset is 52-39 and cogs are 11-23, carbon fork. thats the only info posted. there are no replicas of these types of frames right? only more expensive carbon ones? im trying to avoid replicas.. any info is welcomed. frame size is 48... according to my measures and some online calculators i should be 49-50.. 48 should be col right? (164cm height, 75 cm leg long).

I would probably skip it.. tiagra isnt all that great, if it was used 105 maybe... also I stay away from used carbon.. never know what happened or if it was crashed.. you havent even had a chance to ride it? and not sure if it fits? yeah I wouldnt waste my time on it... btw after googling mosso 737tb7 I found a new frame and fork for about $550 usd

Two bikes in my own collection are over 44 years old. Eroica events typically have bikes that are far older than that. The larger problem is what happens to parts after prolonged periods of neglect. Most of the time the consumable items (brake pads, cables, tape, hoods, plastic bits) are in poor condition and need replacement before the bike can be ridden safely. The bike you posted is no exception.

I want to get a shitty commuter bike for locking outside and I'm curious about fixied gear and don't need another geared bike.

I can't tell what the actual difference between fixies would be except that the better ones are 10 pounds lighter than the shitty ones.

I have multiple road bikes, double butted steel, superlight aluminum, carbon fiber, I'm not the kind of person to lay the superlatives on thick. As far as I'm concerned they all seem fine to me after putting on some high TPI road tires and proper inflation. The biggest difference is the steel one is about 8 pounds heavier.

Is there any reason not not just get a shitty hi-ten one?

For commuting, having a non fancy, cheap and reliable bike is the best option. The ride quality won't be the same as one with a nice bike, but you can leave your bike outside with no problem and If someone steals it, you won't lose too much.

Fair enough- I'll keep that in mind. I'd definitely rather go for a regular manfacturer though. On the other hand, I have seen conversion kits to make press fit bottom brackets compatible with other types of BBs (specifically Campag Power and Ultra Torque) does anyone know if these systems are any good?

Felt makes good bikes at decent prices. Bear in mind the one you're being sold and the one from the link you posted aren't the same bike; the used one is most likely from a previous year, and it has an aluminium frame. I don't think I'd pay $1k for a used alu bike.

The top tube-head tube- downtube part looks welded and does not look very garbon, and you can see welds behind the chainring. Weld=alu

Is there any other good option online? aside from some sale from chainreaction/wiggle?, does anybody knows reliable online stores?.

And about the bike size...My current bike has a 56,5 top tube, and I feel like I need a bit less aero position, should be a 53-54 bike better?

The Canyon is nice. Other alternatives that would be very high on my list is a Cannondale. Don't be put of by the alloy frame. They're lighter than some of the competitions carbon frames and known for excellent handling.
The usual suspects - Evans, Wiggle, Merlin - will have one in your price range.

One of the Planet X bikes recently won a road bike of the year award. It's twice your budget, but the cheaper RT80/Maratona models are just barely above your budget.
The now ageing RT58 introduction alloy model has been available at a steal every now and then, and the all steel Kaffenback with hydro disc 11spd Apex 1 fit you budget just barely.

Bike sizing is very individual, but a typical 53-54 frame might fit a typical 175-180 guy. The caveat being that there are no typical frames and no typical guys. As long as you have standover the rest can be adjusted by changing stems/bars/posts - within reason.

also it has Ritchey 'Nitanium' tubing, which is basically cromoly with a trace of titanium and nickel in it, so that's kinda cool

Not actual touring, more like long distance driving. I was considering an actual tourer or a road bike but our roads have more craters than the moon.
What's wrong with 29ers?
27.5 tires are difficult to find here at affordable prices and 26er is too small for me.

I've saved some extra money but my price range is 400 euros, and since a local bike shop is having a sale I've got my eyes on that one at the moment. It may not have some expensive running gear but I managed the before mentioned mileage on a shimano 7 speed freewheel cassette , some no-brand chain and a front chainring that says Xing Hua on the side. It survived that mileage, 4 downhill descents (paved road, 75 km/h) 1 mtb race and me in my childhood.

We have a local hill with mild trails and a paved road going to the top that all my friends go to for the weekend except me (the fourth time i went with nearly gone v-brake pads and hit a patch of sand in a curve left from road work or something, when I came to a stop mid turn I was about a meter away from the guard rail, haven't been up since) that I would really love going back to again and there are 45 km runs to the nearest town that I've been building endurance for, those are for the moment my requirements for my new bike.

Since I've been out of the loop for awhile I turned to you guys to criticize my choice and give me tips and/or pointers.

Shimano factory lube is green like that. Comes in tubes too. Leave it on, but get the dork disc off. The bike doesn't need cleaning.

You wiping and washing will cause more wear than a tiny coat of dusts. Clean it as often as you wish. Wipe the chain when it starts to look grimy. Wash the sand of with a hose when you come home from a ride in the rain. Give it an annual overhaul with a good clean, new wires, housings and cassette - or do it all a bit early if you're fixing a mechanical problem and need to take it a part anyway. Change chains twice a year or thereabout, assuming you ride a fair bit and all year round.

The frame's aluminum with a bonded carbon rear triangle. It shouldn't be a problem, but definitely ask the seller how it's been used (racing, commuting, leasure, etc) and weigh the risks from there.

Prolly easier to just pick up a complete simplex derailleur and replace it - pretty common and cheap. Is the front derailleur cracked yet ? Plastic on those is very brittle...

I want the bike equivalent of a used Thinkpad T61, meaning:

-Old and simple to work with

-Durable as fuck

-Utilitarian as fuck

-Replacement parts everywhere

-Sells used for 1/10th of retail price

So a full chain enclosure and fixed gear/few speed bike probably. A rear rack would be nice.

I'm interesting in cargo trikes and rickshaws. The pedicabs shouldn;t be too hard as I'm in the UK and most of our major cities (except mine, obviously) have them.

I've got my eyes on a Gromier trike, but the back platform looks a bit small and something about made in taiwan puts me off even though I'm sure their quality has risen since I was a kid. I was also puzzling over if I could attach a trailer onto it. A big one like a Pashley Euroload.

Would this be rideable for someone 6 feet tall with a 31 inch inseam? 23 inch Raleighs are rare as fuck and I haven't been able to find one other than a 21 inch frame model. I've heard that the top tube was the same length for each one regardless.

If you had the choice between these two bikes- orro gold ultegra and canyon endurace cf 9- which would you go for? I can only ride the orro, but not the canyon unfortunately. The only reason why I wouldn't get the orro is the fact it weighs about 1kg more and has slightly worse wheels, that's the only thing holding me back from it really.

I'd probably still recommend you get something with drops if you're going to buy new, since they're much more comfy on rides longer than a few miles as you can move your hands around. The whole drops are uncomfortable thing is a meme, they're actually nice if they're not set up too low.

I'd probably get a specialized allez e5 sport for $980. Its the version with sora, which is almost as good as tiagra for a lot less money, unless you really have to have that extra cog.

If you like trek, the 1.2 is pretty nice, basically the same groupset thats used on the allez and a pretty nice frame.

If you want disc brakes and 10 speed, the giant contend sl disc is around $1k and has mostly tiagra components, which is a pretty good deal.

if you want stuff with lots of mounts, touring oriented bikes are nice, and usually come with very puncture resistant tires. fuji touring is good for around $750

if you do want to go flat bar, the trek fx3 you mentioned isn't bad, although imo its worth paying a bit more for sora components
