if you ride road, mtb or commute, why even bother with straps, spds or the lamest of all alu flat pedal with no pins?

Have you ever tried doing a proper sprint with platform pedals of any kind? You're literally taking your life into your hands and being reckless with it. Have you ever even tried spinning >100rpm for extended periods of time with platform pedals? Same problem. Also: *exhausting* compared to clipless. Nope, sorry bub, platform pedals are for casuals. You're not going very far or very fast on them. Toe cages, straps, and clipless pedals were developed for a reason, and not so 'jew companies can steal your sheckles' or silly shit like that.

Straps let me pull on the upstroke, secure my feet on the pedals in high speed bumps, and lets me cheat at bunny hopping.

Just getting my first pair of proper mtb pinned flats this summer though, and i was surprises at the level of grip they did provide.

heya, OP here, that didnt even come into mind since proper platforms+flat specific 5.0 shoes cost the same if not more as spds+shoes.

I just got a road bike and running platform until I get myself spd shoes - its managable, but the biggest problem is soft sole I could use smth stiffer and bigger RPMs dont seem like a primary problem (Ive mtbed for years so can pedal properly) its mostly power transfer trought the sole.
I havent done much sprinting with them but I belive you about it. dont know why enduro rides force spds so much, its mostly downhill and almost zero pedaling.

to continues - I have tried to do my noobish sprints but with dmr v8 platforms (low to mid platform level). Its was OK honeslty, but Im a noob so take it with salt...however the difference between pinned platforms and regular alu platforms is tremendous, pinned platform unlike alu crap even provide grip on the upstroke if you properly position feet

Also raw efficiency data doesnt equal real world applications. Clipless helps so much for climbing. I've ridden both and its no question. For flats/sprints its negligible though.

LIAR! I nearly died from crenk brahs pedals not disengaging in a crash. bar end jammed into my thigh and almost ruptured my femoral artery from the force of impact. those proprietary clips are shit and take an act of god to disengage at all. they have ace flats though.

that being said, i tepidly agree with you; if you're having trouble unclipping, that's not the pedals — that's you. that being said, this whole "wahhh you're retarded they're too difficult for you" bullshit is incredibly retarded. everyone has trouble with clipless pedals at first. if you're struggling with them, the answer is to practice with them more. get *very* comfortable unclipping at least one at a moment's notice (obviously, preferably both); if you need to stop very abruptly you don't exactly want to find yourself falling over while you panic and struggle to unclip.

clipless pedals also force you to get more aware of what's coming up ahead. for the little while that you still need to consciously unclip, you'll find that you *need* to be more aware of what's up ahead or you'll constantly find yourself blind sided and trying to unclip suddenly.

but none of this means that you should give up on clipless pedals because you're too stupid or any of that condescending horse shit. it just means you should practice it until you're comfortable.

as far as confidence goes i find myself being A LOT more reckless on flats because i know i can bail out of anything, but that also leads to more actual fun. if i'm training (ascents, intervals, etc.) i'll run my hellcats with mallet e's though.

Snobbery i guess. To me they fit into the hyper casual category with foam saddles, hybrids with suspension and complaining about toe overlap. I have yet to meet a serious cyclist who rates them, or seen a nice bike sporting them.

Was thinking of going to road cleats but spds just work and are relatively cheap. 5 bucks each out here with used shoes from 10 bucks.

I got my lake shoes for 20. Those str dope.

For spd-sl to spd there's no concessions for walking so, lighter (this is a really nice place to drop a few hundred grams), more breathable, wider pressure distribution and stiffer which eliminate hotspots, better engagement, aesthetics.

It is all real, but marginal. IMO the system to choose for most riders is the one you can find shoes that fit best for.

However when i see spds on a road bike under 9kg i want to slap the shit out a fred. They're paying all over the show for marginal gains and it's like if they had a steel seatpost.

Double sided pedals are good for off road riding when you may need to take your foot off the pedal and don't have the time to fuck about flipping the pedal over. Similarly plastic pedals may not be a good choice for off road riding due to being weaker, they can break either from heavy landings or by being hit on obstacles. Also if you hit your shins that much and are too much of a bitch to handle the pain you can always wear shin guards.

Decent plastic BMX platforms are not weak though, they see a LOT of abuse and they're just a lot gentler for general use, on a commuter or whatever, metal mtb platforms are just a bit of a cunt. MKS or other are legit, although i don't like the classic styled quill pedals which are really designed for stiff cycling shoes and cut ridges in your soles.

After using clipless long enough i like not having to hold my feet on the pedals, but every now and then ill need to unclip to cyclecross through traffic.

Clipping/unclipping was never a problem for me for some reason
