Morris Canal, in NJ, mainly transported barges of coal from Pennsylvania to NYC. Had the highest change of elevation, going west a barge would rise 914 feet, then descend 715 feet. That's crazy! The Panama canal has a change of height of 90 feet! Granted, the Morris handled smaller stuff, but still. It used inclines to change the height of barges, pictured, and they were all powered by water turbines. How freaking cool?!
