Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Light Railway

Has anyone else been to or have heard of this railway? It runs from New Romney, Dungeness and Hythe in Kent, England. If so what are you thoughts of it? I have been there many times and liked it.
(The the locomotive in the photo is called Doctor Syn, a Canadian designed locomotive built in Sheffield, England. http://www.rhdr.org.uk/locomotives-dr-syn.html

We have railways the same gauge and scale as the RHDR, but none of them have a legit transportation role. All are exclusively tourist/scenic things.

Pic related is one such one in the SF Bay area and they also run a British-made gallopers (one of only two in the US).

There were multiple narrow gauge railways active in the U.S. as late as the 1970's. One of the largest was the Denver & Rio Grande Western which started as a 3' narrow gauge line servicing the Colorado Rocky Mountains. It expanded to include standard gauge lines that reached as far as California. The D&RGW had something like 2000 miles of narrow gauge line at one point as well as long sections of dual gauge line. Narrow gauge operations had mostly ended by the mid 1970's and most of the trackage was abandoned. Sections were preserved and converted into scenic tourist railroads, such as the Durango & Silverton. The D&G operates several 2-8-0 and 2-8-2 locomotives on about 60 miles of right of way. There are a couple of other D&RGW remnants operating as well including the Cumbres & Toltec operating in southern Colorado.And northern New Mexico on 64 miles or right of way. There are three other remnants operating, but they are all standard gauge.

Not narrow gauge, but there's the Little River Rail Road in Cold water, Michigan. Thier main locomotive is the #110, the smallest standard gauge 4-6-2 Pacific ever built. She was ordered by a Tennessee logging operation from Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1911. She's basically a narrow gauge locomotive on a set of standard gauge running gear.

The 110 is unique. Unlike many logging railroads of the period, the Little River was built as a standard gauge line so it's cars could run on the main line and main line passenger cars could run on the Little River. But like most logging railroads, the Little River used the bear minimum to function with the lightest rail possible and minimum ballast. Even a light mainline locomotive would be too heavy. The 110 weighs just 58 tons and her center drivers are flangeless which allow her to take insanely tight curves that normally only a small 0-4-0 could take. By comparison, a Pennsylvania Railroad K4 4-6-2 was a 212 ton beast.

Little River Railroad has a.second steamer in service, the #1. The #1 is a Vulcan Iron Works 25 ton 0-4-0T switcher type. Despite her small size, she can haul as much weight as the 110, just not as fast or as far. Incidentally, for $400 you can make reservations and drive one of the Little River steamers.

Fun fact: the Little River Railroad is named that because the logging railroad in Tennessee where the #110 came from had the same name. There is actually a museum for the original little River Railroad in Tennessee near Great Smoky Mountains Nat'l Park.

Some of those D&RGW 2-8-2s are also operational on other tourist railroads far away from Colorado, such as the Huckleberry Railroad near Flint, Michigan and Knott's Berry Farm near Los Angeles.

Denver and Rio Grande Western #278 2-8-0 Consolidation C-16 Class. I think this one is serving on the Cumbres & Toltec now. At one point in the 1940's, the D&RGW had several hundred narrow gauge locomotives in service. There are quite a few of them still around. the largest, the 2-8-2 K37 Class locomotives kind of go past the "light rail" concept considering they weigh just over 100 tons with a loaded tender and develop 37,000 lbs of tractive effort.

#63 4-4-0 American "Leviathan". This is one of America's newest steam locomotives. David Kloke, a construction company owner, decided he wanted a Civil war era 4-4-0 American locomotive, and when he couldn't find one for sale, he founded a company to build one. It took Kloke Locomotive Works ten years to build her from scratch and she was completed in 2009. She's oil fired rather than wood fired. Her owner takes her around the country and she has run in multiple festivals including a Golden Spike commemoration and has pulled a replica of the Lincoln funeral train.

Leviathan is small enough (barely) to be carried on a heavy equipment transporter from one location to another. Her tender rides on a separate transport with additional equipment.

This site has a fairly comprehensive listing of operational steam locomotives in the U.S. It doesn't include locomotives built for parks and whatnot, but mostly concentrates on locos that started life running on commercial or industrial railroads. Leviathan is the one exception.

I see no reason why full-size steam locomotives built specifically for parks should be excluded if they really are powered by steam and aren't fakes. There wouldn't be that many that you would have to include either. Basically like 10 Crown Metal Products locos.

That was my personal statement, not a statement by the website owner, but it seems to be the case. and it's by no means a complete list. None of the Virginia & Truckee locomotives are on it, for example. Pic is the J W Bowker, V&T #21. She built for the Virginia and Truckee rail Road in 1875 by Baldwin Locomotive works, and is the only 2-4-0 Porter Baldwin ever built.
